In this lecture, Dr. Degruy speaks on Cognitive Dissonance, Labels & Racial Characterizations (passed off to the masses as Scientific Assessments), and other means in which Europeans have sought to escape accountability for 400+ years of Slavery, Colonialism & Oppression. From there she goes on to provide a More Accurate Definition of Racism, as opposed to Racial Hatred as "The Power To Affect An Entire Group." This lays the foundation for for further examination of topics such as The Contradictions written into American History (i.e. The ideals of Freedom & Democracy written into The U.S. Constitution as the framework of this nation-while simultaneously initiating the genocide of Native Americans & the brutality of American Chattel Slavery). There are also The rarely discussed elements of being kidnapped & removed from their homelands, the brutal process of breaking those that would fight back against their captors, and the deplorable & inhuman conditions that existed on the slave ship voyage. One important note, that Dr. DeGruy points out here is that Other European Nations acknowledge not only the Crimes of Humanity enacted during Slavery; but also the Lingering Effects of the experience. In America we avoid the subject at all costs; or label the person that speaks on it as being a Black or Reverse Racist.
Dr. Joy Degruy has a Bachelors Degree in Communications, a Masters in Psychology, a Masters in Social Work, and a PH.D in Social Work Research. The concepts she presents in this video are the product of 12 years of research; and could easily serve as the framework for much-needed conversations of Race. Without an honest communication, we will never move forward. One might also notice that this presentation was given to a room full of Caucasians. #LearnGrowAndElevate
