In continuing our "HIP HOP 4 THE OVER 30 CROWD" Series, we're rolling out BLAQ POET's "MEAN & DIRTY " Video-featuring TRAGEDY KHADAFI & CELPH-TITLED. I've been feeling Blaq Poet, and his Intelligent "QB" Style Gangsta, for a minute. And Tragedy Khadafi aka Intelligent Hoodlum is one of my all-time faves. Enough talking though. P
AND HIP HOP WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN: Reflections on "ENTER THE WU-TANG 36 CHAMBERS" Released 20 YEARS AGO TODAY...
The game ain;t been the same since since B.I.G. died, and Wu swarmed on New York from out that beehive...
November 9th marks the 20 years since "ENTER THE WU-TANG 36 CHAMBERS" hit the stores-and launched a revolution that would change the business of Hip Hop forever. Previously unknown to hip hop fans outside of New York, the original nine members are said to have chipped in $100 dollars apiece to press up the debut singles "PROTECT YA NECK" & "METHOD MAN." The success of those two singles would launch a bidding war, with the same record labels that dissed them just a year or so earlier vying for the opportunity to sign the crew to a deal. But it was Loud Records CEO Steve Rifkind that had the vision to sign The WU to a deal that would also allow each individual member to sign solo deals with the label of their choosing. The rise to super stardom came slow, as the album didn't really break into the mainstream until 1994; but once the single "C.R.E.A.M." was released, it was on...
I remember it like yesterday. A close family friend-technically my sister-worked at Blockbuster Music I think; and dropped a promo copy on me. INSTANTLY I was taken back with the raw sound, ill concepts, Shaolin Kung Fu samples, and grimy lyrics. Based on 1993 standards, there just wasn't much of that going around. But along with A Tribe Called Quest & Black Moon, the foundation of the next Golden Age of Hip Hop (1994-1996) would be ushered in... I still rock this album today, as if it came out only a couple of years ago. Of course from here, the Wu Tang Clan would dominate the next four or five years of hip hop, and open even more doors with clothing lines, movies & more. So tonight I listen to the album that started the WU-REVOLUTION, and wait patiently for what will likely be their final album to drop next year.
Yes I said Kanye or Yeezus? I don't even know but STAY WITH ME FOR A MINUTE lol
We can say a lot about Kanye's antics & his arrogance but one thing I know I can't deny is his genius. Shake your head all that you want at his foolishness but could you sell a plain white t-shirt for $120 AND SELL OUT? Exactly.
Now he's not my favorite MC of all time but no matter how much I fight it, I love his music. His lyrics are often clever, unique, controversial and even sometimes so in your face and off the wall you can feel violated in an awkward way. And sometimes I even find words that speak to me from Yeezy.
I'm the only thing I'm afraid of
This line spoke to me today. Now the song overall is about being fearless with everyone else, nothing in the world you should be afraid of. Ok True you have a point here Kanye/Kimye but are you the only thing you are afraid of really?
I know I know I am very wrong for the reference. In a humorous mood today. Anyways I venture to say that in fact he is NOT afraid of himself at all. Why?
Well because fear of yourself or potential, well I see that as nothing but holding you back. And obviously he is not scared to leap and try anything. I thought about how I have been saying how I believe so much in myself and my vision for my business when I heard this song this morning. And What I took from it is that, No I have not been believing 100% in myself. Maybe 90%, but wheres that 10% at?
I'm the only thing I'm afraid of
That other 10% I have been lacking has been fear of giving full potential and failing. Fear of unknown, fear of being made uncomfortable. Its fear of your own potential.
Think about it. Deep right? I dont think that is what he meant in his song because the other lyrics speak to me as how you SHOULD be but that one line speaks to me on HOW I HAVE BEEN. And in the past and other areas of life the fear can vary from 1-100%. Not limited to career.
Its all internal. All you baby! No one can choose to help or harm this lack of confidence in yourself.
So I ask you, What areas are You the only thing you are afraid of?
Think about areas in your life you are not fully satisfied in. Career? Health? Relationships? Education? Choices? Friends?
Who or What is REALLY holding you back?
Now decide today that:
#1 I am going to change that and
#2 Plan of action on How I am going to change that.
Realization alone is everything.
So today I decided. Whats 10%? And I said Bye to fear of my capabilities. I fear more for you. I don't know if the world is ready for all that I have to offer.
Boom! Check it!
as always P.E.A.C.E & Much Luv,
