They say Hell Hath No fury Like A Woman Scorned; but for my dollar, I'm betting on the Wrath that America's Military Industrial Complex sets forth on it's foes. Doesn't matter if the foe was once an ally, or if the beef stems from a perceived slights that occurred more than 20 years ago. As a child, I remember watching the Evening News and hearing stories of the war between Iran & Iraq. Rarely is this period of war, in the 1980's, ever spoken about-and even less is said about the support provided by U.S. President Ronald Reagan & British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Of course, since then it has been revealed that secretly the U.S. was arming BOTH sides. There's also that little piece to the story of how drugs were allowed to be sold in American cities to help finance this and other covert operations (read up on Iran-Contra, Freeway Ricky Ross, and the beginnings of the Crack Epidemic). The most important piece to the story here though is that the American government knew that Saddam was bat-shit crazy. Same with The Taliban. Crazy, Oppressive, Brutal-but USEFUL at the time. Later, we all know, Saddam Hussein would be compared to Hitler & eventually executed. The leadership of the same Taliban, that Reagan & Thatcher publicly referred to as "Patriots & Freedom Fighters," has been executed or imprisoned. Tough price to pay for being an ALLY, right??? The most recent victim of America's past grudges now settled would unfortunately be former Libyan Leader Muammar Al-Gaddafi. To my knowledge, Gaddafi was never an ally to the U.S.; but was largely hated for financing & influencing nations that wanted to shake off the grip of western Imperialism. A revolutionary who, unlike most others in the Middle East, proudly declared himself to be an African. In April 1986, President Ronald Reagan ordered airstrikes that included Gaddafi's home. Casualties, estimated at between 30-60, included what has been believed to have been Gaddafi's adopted infant daughter. Libya was again bombed under President Bill Clinton's command; but in 2008, it appeared that peace would finally prevail. In 2008, Libya agreed to pay more than $1.5 billion as restitution for Libyan involvement in the multiple terrorist attacks that had occurred in the 1980's. For this, President George W. Bush signed an Executive Order granting immunity from further actions against Libya. Over course we all know that once the ransom has been paid, the hostage is no longer of value. Still a proponent of Anti-Imperialism & Socialist-Style Unity among nations, Colonel Muammar Qaddafi's regime would be overthrown. As with Saddam, Qaddafi would be publicly humiliated before execution. Things are no better in EITHER country. And in the case of Qaddafi, it appears that at least one ally in The U.S. repeatedly warned him of trusting the Western Powers promises of reconciliation.
