"The Mystery Of Chessboxing" 1979

Picture
For any fan of Old School Shaolin Kung Fu flicks, The Mystery Of Chess Boxing aka Ninja Checkmate would be considered among the Top Tier Greats.

Originally released in 1979, it is a classic story of revenge; but with a slightly more complicated spin on it.  As most kung fu flicks simply center around the efforts of the story's hero seeking to avenge the evil committed by a villainous figure, The Mystery of Chessboxing also weaves in a tale of the Villain's quest to avenge what he deems to have a legitimate wrong committed against himself.

The film is directed by Joseph Kuo, has been used for a number of RZA samples on various early Wu Tang Clan projects, inspired the name of the same-titled track on 1993's "Enter The Wu-Tang 36 Chambers, and is the influence behind the Emcee Moniker Ghostface Killah.

Whether a lover of the genre, or not, watching the Ghost Face Killer use his legendary Five Elements style to get revenge against the Kung Fu Masters that left him for dead &  young Ah Pao mission to avenge the murder of his father, make for a great way to spend your Sunday leisure time (or any day for that matter).  Comments & Feedback Encouraged & Appreciated.  Enjoy.

"Cornbread, Earl and Me"
1975

Picture
Picture
Cornbread, Earl and Me was a classic "coming of age" story based on Ronald Fair's Novel "Hog Butcher."  Each tell the story of perils and tragedies that often accompany inner city life, and the struggles of the community to survive and elevate past those conditions.  The movie features a young Laurence Fishburne & former Los Angeles Laker star Jamaal Wilkes.  The cast is rounded out with an all star grouping of pioneering talent, that paved the way for so many others during the 1970's and 1980's, including Moses Gunn, Rosalind Cash, Bernie Casey, Madge Sinclair, Thalmus Rasulala, and Antonio Fargas.

As the story goes... High School Basketball Star Nathaniel "Cornbread" Hamilton is all set to embark on a better life, via a recently earned college scholarship, when he is mistakenly killed by overzealous cops.  While the community mourns, the "power that be" attempt to cover up the police misconduct with lies and intimidation tactics.  As the only witness to the truth, young Wilford Robinson is faced with a choice that could haunt him, his family, and his community-whether he chooses to speak out or remain silent...  Enjoy.

"Eddie Murphy Delirious"
1983

Picture
Picture
Most of today's youth know Eddie Murphy more for his G & PG Rated features, such as Shrek, Norbit, Daddy Day Care, etc.  But for those like myself, our image of Eddie Murphy is so much more R Rated.  Hell, maybe X Rated on some points.  As a child this one stand-up comedy film stood above all others, in terms of variety, creativity, and over-the-top story-telling.  From Eddie's parodies of Michael Jackson and Mr. T-to G.I. Joe meeting the "Big Brown Shark"-to Aunt Bunny & The Family Cookout, EDDIE MURPHY DELIRIOUS will add much needed humor to ANY Day.  Enjoy.  (Writers Note:  Please Pardon the Subtitles)

"SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME"

SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME is a 2012 PBS documentary on the racial and economic corruption administered on Black Families by former slave owners and the Criminal Justice system in the former confederate states.  Following the Civil war and continuing throughout the post industrial era, Black men, women and children were used as slaves by former plantation and mining company owners.  These owners had close corrupt relationships with local law enforcement from the police, courts and corrections. Wealthy business owners would spot Blacks that they wanted to work within their companies and would have local police arrest them for petty crimes. The courts would prosecute, convict them and then charge them fines/court costs that they could not pay. The Blacks would then have their debts paid by these wealthy business owners and correctional facilities would lease them out as workers for the company for an extended time based on their debt owed.  They'd be forced to work and live in deplorable conditions until the debt was deemed paid.  Some were never released, even after fulfilling the time and work to be served. This is REAL AMERICAN HISTORY...
