When We Were KingsAs I started the morning off watching the replay of Floyd Mayweather Jr versus Canelo Alvarez, my long-touted assertion that Floyd "Money" Mayweather is the closest thing to Ali ever comes to mind again. While Floyd draws NO COMPARISON to the Politically/Socially uplifting element of Muhammad Ali's legacy, no other fighter has been more hated. No other fighter has had so many opponents that were begged to finally crush the loud mouth champion-only to be humiliated & exposed as inferior in defeat. "When We Were Kings" won an Academy Award, for Best Documentary Feature, in 1996. The film chronicles the Before, during & After of the October 1974 Heavyweight Championship Bout between Muhammad Ali and then Champion George Foreman. Most commonly referred to as the "Rumble In The Jungle," Absolutely No One imagined that the aging Ali would be able to regain his title against the juggernaut that was George Foreman. The film captures many of the behind the scenes dramas & many elements of the Social & Political Issues of the turbulent 1970's. It is a Must Watch, for those who haven't already seen it. Especially good for the children. Enjoy. |
