Traditionally speaking, Black August is considered to be a time to study history the history of Black Men, Women & Children in North America.
- The first Afrikan Slaves were brought to Jamestown in August of 1619
- In 1843, Activist Henry Highland Garnett called a general slave strike (August 22)
- The Underground Railroad is said to have started on August 2nd, 1850
- The March on Washington occurred on August 28th, 1963
- Gabriel Prosser's Slave Rebellion occurred on August 30th 1800
- Nat Turner planned and executed a slave rebellion that began on August 21st 1831.
- The Watts Rebellions began on August 11th, 1965.
- FBI & Mississippi Law Enforcement used tear gas, guns & tanks to attack The Republic of New Afrika (RNA) Residence. One Police Officer was killed, with two others wounded. There were no RNA casualties.
- Police launch an assault of guns & water cannons on the Philadelphia MOVE headquarters on August 8, 1978. Nine MOVE members would be arrested & sentenced to jail terms ranging from 30 to 100 years.
- Pan-Africanist/Black Nationalist Leaders Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Fred Hampton, Russell "Maroon" Shoatz & Dr. Mutulu Shakur were all born during the month of August.
