The difference here is, unlike the other places and races, there is actually a “person of interest” named to have been directly involved in a conspiracy. His name is Leslie McCrae Dowless Jr. Working as a consultant, on behalf of The Red Dome Group, Dowless is now the face of a storm of allegations large enough that, this past Friday, the state election board announced its decision refusing to certify the results of this year’s election in which Republican Mark Harris won by a total of only 905 votes.
It has been documented, in sworn affidavits, that citizens in Bladen & Robeson counties were visited by a woman asking to collect their absentee ballots. At least one stated that the woman advised that she would finish filing out the ballot; while others confirmed that their ballots were still blank when collected. Based on reports by The Charlotte Observer, and now multiple other news agencies, that woman was Lisa Britt, the step-daughter of Leslie McCrae Dowless Jr.
Dowless also had his name come up relating to similar questions of mail-in ballot tampering back in 2016. Buzzfeed even reported allegations that Dowless paid his workers under the table (one even received a car as payment), and that some were using even using drugs while on the clock.
To be clear, mail-in/absentee ballots are to be filed in by the voter, sealed for privacy protection, and mailed in to the local election commission for counting. It has also been alleged that an unusually high number of requested ballots were never returned for counting, that unauthorized workers had access to election results (at the closing of the early voting period); and that there were absentee ballots found in poor condition with “coding” written on them, among other allegations provided to the Board Of Elections.
