My name is Marissa (far right). I can’t even begin to express how excited I am to start this blog for you all, but I’ll try my best. I have always loved to write. I think it’s in my blood, with my dad being as masterful as he is with his lyrics and music. As early as elementary school, you could catch me skipping recess, staying inside, and working on my latest original short story. I loved to write, as I loved (note the past tense use) to read. My favorite childhood books included Encyclopedia Brown, Captain Underpants, and, of course, Goosebumps. I really enjoyed those books because, in the case of Encyclopedia Brown and Captain Underpants, they were physically immersive and hands on to a point where my attention was captured in an instant. However, I can be honest and say that this love of reading did come to an end. I can remember the exact reason why, too.
You know how you have those Summer Reading requirements starting the summer after elementary school? Yep. That did it for me. Once I was forced to read, rather than reading for my own enjoyment, I was pretty much over the whole thing. I hated not being able to choose my own adventure. I hated the idea of reading something so big that I wouldn’t even be able to finish it as slowly as I wanted to before summer ended. I HATED being forced out of my comfort zone.
I believe I read only two summer reading books. They were Island of the Dolphins and The Book Thief. Reading those books at that time reminded me just how fun reading could be, but just wasn’t enough to get me back into it. To this day I can barely get myself to read an article on Buzzfeed. Since the age of 18 (I am now 21) the only books I have read are books 1-6 of the Harry Potter Series. Yes, I’m still working on the last one; I have been for almost a year, actually. That’s how badly summer reading ruined the joy of reading for me, I can’t even read something I really enjoy.
So, enough with the background, how about I tell you a little bit about myself? No? Too bad. But, this so-called hatred of reading has, thankfully, not stopped my love of writing, and I strive to write a little something whenever I have the time. My favorite things to write are song parodies. I usually write them around 3 in the morning, when my creativity sparks most. I try to make them as funny as possible (I am the most humorous one in the family), and then I play the original instrumentals in the background while I “sing” it to my sister. I have written so many that I can’t even count. Some have been lost in the process, but I can still remember bits and pieces of them (or at least the general topic). I post most of them on my Tumblr side blog (follow @pair-o-deez-nuts if you’d like a laugh).
As I mentioned before, I am 21 years old (yay). I love animals to death (get it- because I still eat them?) and my dream in life is is to own an animal sanctuary. Yes, I would also, ideally like to become vegan, but that will take some time for me, personally. I have two dogs, one that I rescued with my own hands, and another that we’ve had since I was 12. I also have a cat. I regret asking for this cat but here we are. While I haven’t read the whole HP book series, I have seen all of the movies, and still consider myself a huge fan. I’m a Gryffindor so don’t f*** with me!!
I have a health condition called Pulmonary Hypertension and I also have Asperger’s, so expect some posts about that. And that’s pretty much all there is to know about me, or at least all I can think of telling you for now. So, if you have any questions, or just want to know more about me, feel free to ask! Thanks for reading. I can’t wait to write more for you.
