Recently I was building with the Editor Jabriel Allah over the lack of substance in music overall, and how it seems to be getting worse-not better. However, I wanted to speak specifically to the vinyl culture and its constituents. They, well better put, WE have been largely marginalized by the current music industry. The contemporary music that seems to sound good today is largely based off a riff, sample or interpolation lifted from an 'old' song, and/or the use of vintage equipment/styles/songwriters and composers-most of which, are only available through crate digging in used record stores, or getting some 'hand me downs' from ancestors that have passed on. However, people that know this fact seem to lack adequate platforms on which to voice their opinions on good but lesser known music that dismantles the current monolithic music industry's products. It's basically a suppression of their voices, and even worse the music. It's largely economic. I mean honestly corporations just want to make money; and it's problematic as well as costly for them to access and control good music that has rare notoriety and circulation. In turn, they just flood the market with one hit wonders and fluff. I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to hear "We Live in Brooklyn" by Roy Ayers or Digable Planets on any FM/AM radio station...or Frank Zappa "Little Umbrellas," or Phil Ranelin "Vibes from the Tribe." It's great music though!

I want to be clear that I have nothing against the current artist pool, no matter how monotonous I think it is... My purpose is to be a champion of good music that has little notoriety. Also, a huge peeve of mine is when I play a sampled/interpolated song and a listener says that's "so and so," when in actuality, "so and so" borrowed from the artists I'm playing. Thus, this forum should also be educational. School the public, if you will. People should be able to come here, drop some jewels, post links to good music, debate over all things associated with vinyl, access resources for building or retailing their collections and equipment set ups, etc. etc. These are a few of the pertinent goals this page aspires to cultivate and bring into fruition.
With that said, let's get into the "Meaning of the Name..."
During a text conversation with the editor a few days ago I informed him of my ideas and goals for the page; and that I wanted to come up with a name for it that had something to do directly with turntables and spinning vinyl-while having it coupled with the blog name Wandering Eyes. And that this could stand as a nemesis to the commercialization of music by monolithic corporations. The name also had to be short, concise, and to the point at best. Seemed like a daunting task at first, but I turned to the mind and started brainstorming. I decided I would use a euphemism of sorts... Since youth, I've always liked euphemisms, a lot. More so the origins of them, which are very interesting. However, I recalled one that talked about a camel going through the eye of a needle. It's from the Bible, Luke chapter 18 verse 25:

"For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."
I shortened this to be "Through the Eye of A Needle." Essentially meaning if you're an artist or an admirer of good music, it's difficult for us out here because the industry doesn't even acknowledge the music we create or listen to. So we can't expect to hear it until we play it. In summary, music (as it's seen through the eyes of people cueing it up using their needles) will allow them, the listener or creator of the music to have a platform to discuss their visualizations of what they hear. Music and Mathematics are the only two universal languages. So this page is for all of humanity. We should celebrate the good music as an online community! After all, there's only two types of music, good and bad....
