On July 21st, in 1955, the bassist for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Howie Epstein, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Most noted for the bottom laid on the 1977 single 'American Girl', and the 1989 'I Won't Back Down', Epstein played with Tom Petty for years. He helped shape the Heartbreakers sound, while remaining authentic. According to death records, he died of a suspected drug overdose in New Mexico on the 23rd of February, in 2003.
On July 21st, in 1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience performed the first of a three night gig at the infamous Cafe-a-Go-Go in New York City. The venue has hosted many of well-known acts at the time like: Jefferson Airplane, Tim Buckley, Cream, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, Howlin’ Wolf, and many more. On July 21st, in 2005, the bluesy and hard-edged UK born and bred singer Long John Baldry died from complications associated with an upper respiratory infection. Baldry was an original founder of the UK Rock & Roll/Blues-based bands Blues Incorporated and Cyril Davies' R&B All Stars; and later in life he became the lead singer for the Hoochie Coochie Men featuring Rod Stewart. He also did work with Brian Auger & Julie Driscoll for the band called Steam Packet. He eventually worked with Elton John in Bluesology. His voice being so distinctive, he was the acting narrator behind Winnie The Pooh recordings for Disney and the voice for Robotnik on the Sonic The Hedgehog game.
