Originally posted on 07-27-18: On July 27th, in 1917, the renowned Blues Singer Moses Rascoe was born in Windsor, North Carolina. He got his first guitar at age 13 (1940). 50 years later and a couple of states north, he became a professional musician in Pennsylvania. In between that time, he worked as a truck driver and a day laborer. He died in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1994. He should serve as an inspirational figure for all that debate if it’s ‘too late’ to pursue your goals and dreams. Pursue them anyways, no matter how far-fetched they may seem to others.
On July 27th, in 1929, Harvey Fuqua, former member of the Moonglows, super producer of groups like the New Birth, Nite Liters, Johnny Bristol, Etta James, Lamont Dozier, Tammi Terrell, Marvin Gaye, The Spinners, Junior Walker, Sylvester The Weather Girls, and husband of Gwen Gordy (Barry Gordy’s sister)-was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He’s one of my personal favorite producers. He’s worked for Chess Records, Motown, Tri Phi, Anna Records (Gordy’s sister company), RCA, and Fantasy. He died in Detroit, Michigan on July 6th, 2010 at age 80.

On July 26th, in 1984, the Kid-Jamie Starr-The Love Symbol-Christopher Tracy-The Artist-PRINCE’s groundbreaking movie based loosely around his life-PURPLE RAIN-debuted nationwide. It included The Time, and Vanity’s replacement-Apollonia 6. The soundtrack is credited as being one of the top 100 albums of all time by Time Magazine and it’s in the top 500 for Rolling Stones. After his fame took off, there was some blowback from Tipper Gore for the lyrics on Darling Nikki. Parental advisory stickers would be added to the LP cover because her 11 year old daughter was ‘traumatized’ by it. Tipper needs some love;-)

On July 27th, in 1996..."1 for the money, yessir, 2 for the show….Me & You…Your Momma and Your Cousin too"... Was number 5 on the R&B Top 100 chart and number 12 on the US Pop chart…. The Outkast song Elevators was the first single released off their second LP ATLiens. The LP was officially released on Aug 27th, 1996, a month later. The single had only been out for 1 day (released July 25th, 1996), and already it was in the top 20 on both charts. This LP saw Outkast put in work on the production end for the first time. Organized Noize and Earthtone III also added some tracks.

Honorable Mention: On July 27th, in 1958, the parental promoted fear campaign of the ill effects of Rock ‘n’ Roll music was in full effect. Much like the reefer madness fear mongering from prior decades, Rock ‘n’ Roll was deemed as hypersexual, the Devil’s music, made children rebellious and crazy, and so on, and so on. News reporters would claim that listening to Rock ‘n’ Roll while driving made kids more prone to drive recklessly and speed, which ran up gas costs (Esso Gas Company).
Honorable Mention: On July 27th, in 1985, members of The Eurythmics-Annie Lennox vocals & Dave Stewart on guitar, had their one and only number 1 UK single: 'There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)'. Stevie Wonder played harmonica on the track.
