On July 22nd, in 1961, the 80’s/90’s Rhythm & Blues crooner Keith Sweat was born on Sugarhill-Harlem, NYC. He’s also an actor (cameo appearance in New Jack City), radio personality, and has produced several records. Keith’s was an original member of the group Jamilah (1975) & went solo in 1984. He has musical roots in his family as well. His uncle was an original member of the band GQ. Big Up to Keith Sweat for adding an original voice and style to contemporary soul music sound.

On July 22nd, in 1969, Aretha Franklin was arrested for ‘disturbing the peace’, allegedly, in a parking lot. I don’t believe she was disturbing the peace, the cops did though. This all went down in Detroit, Michigan. She was detained briefly, posted her $50.00 bail and then left the station. However, she had to leave her mark to let the cops know she’d been there, so she ran down a road sign while she was leaving. I can’t lie, when I discovered this musical fact, I was like: ‘Aretha Franklin?! Daughter of Reverend C. L. Frankiln?!’ S.O. to Ms. Franklin. I have a newfound respect for her, no pun intended.

On July 22nd, in 2005, Eugene Record, the founding member of the Chi-Lites, died in Chicago, Illinois at age 64 after a battle with cancer. He co-wrote and produced songs with Barbara Acklin for the Chi-Lites, as well as others acts like Jackie Wilson, The Lost Generation, Otis Leavill, The Dells, and The Impressions to name a few. He also released three solo albums. He moved away from the secular scene in the 80’s and began signing gospel. Eugene Record's songs have been sampled by many. Most notably, Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love”, which is based off the Chi-Lites’ Are You My Woman (Tell Me So).
