On August 13th, in 1938, the two Blues KINGS of the time shared the stage for a brief moment before one of them ended up dead in a tragic situation over a love triangle. As the story goes, Sonny Boy Williamson (right) and Robert Johnson (left) were performing at the infamous Three Forks Roadhouse just outside of Greenwood, Mississippi (Delta Blues). Both men were known as Womanizers. However, Johnson allegedly drank some poisoned whiskey, that was tainted by the husband of one of his many conquests that he’d had an affair with. Johnson got sick, and later died as a result.

On August 13th, in 1990, singer, songwriter, composer, and producer-Curtis Mayfield endured a life changing tragedy that would not stop his music career. Mayfield was critically injured (paralyzed) during an outdoor concert in Brooklyn, New York City, New York at Wingate High School. A lighting fixture struck Mayfield during a torrential storm while he was performing on the school’s football field. He recorded several songs and an Album while paralyzed. Sidebar: Mayfield’s son was closely aligned with the first recording and production of Outkast’s Southernplayalistic LP.

On August 13th, in 1994-The seminal second edition of the classic Woodstock Concert (Woodstock ‘94) was held in upstate New, York (Saugerties, New York). 25 years earlier, Jimi Hendrix did his unforgettable rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. Today’s NFL players would most likely stand for Jimi’s version of the anthem. 25 years later, veteran performer and folk singer, Richie Havens performed for the concert along with contemporary groups like Nine Inch Nails, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers & Aerosmith to name a few. Tickets were $135.00 and over 350,000 fans attended.

On August 13th, in 1999, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash was arrested for domestic abuse. He & his girlfriend at the time had an argument that led to Slash striking her. This occurred in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California at Sunset Boulevard recording studio. The Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies took Slash into custody. They would later release him on bail.
