On September 8th, in 1952, Mr Hit the Road Jack-Ray Charles left Swingtime Records for Atlantic after the latter bought Ray’s contract out. For the first session Ray Charles did with Atlantic Records he put down four songs: Mess Around, I Got a Woman (Way ‘Cross Town), Hallelujah-I Love Her So & What’d I Say. Ray was banging from the jump with Atlantic. What’d I Say & I Got a Woman are considered some of his best songs, for them to be the first ones he recorded with Atlantic speaks volumes about his early artistry. He mixed Gospel hymns and rhythms with Soul & Jazz tinges to make his own style. Essentially, it was the equivalent of N.W.A. taking staple songs from Hip Hop & making them explicit (My Adidas RUN DMC-My Penis Ice Cube). A lot of people fled Ray’s scene because of his use of Gospel anthems turned Soul hits, he gained many more fans that saw his vision than the ones he lost. Creativity has no bounds.
On September 8th, in 1965-the Original Carmen-Actress, Dancer and Female Vocalist Extraordinaire-Dorothy (Jean) Dandridge returned home due to an embolism and accidental drug over-dose in West Hollywood, California. The Cleveland, Ohio Native was one of the best to ever hit the stage, club, microphone, and silver screen. She paved the way for numerous actresses of color that would follow. Playing more than the stereotypical lower-class Jim Crow type of roles: hookers, thugs, shuck and jive characters, etc. The all Black film crews and casts she worked with, painted a more realistic picture of the Real Black Community of the time. It cotained those living in poverty and the upper classes with all socio-economic statuses that go between the two. She is greatly appreciated and missed.
… ‘Ain’t no love…in the heart of the city’…The opening line was provided by an infamous Blues mogul-Bobby Blue Bland. On September 8th, in 1972 The University of Michigan-Big Blue-The Wolverines, Ann Arbor Michigan hosted the Ann Arbor Jazz & Blues Festival. The lineup on the 8th was fierce! Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jr Walker & the All-Stars, Otis Spann & Bobby Blue Bland... The Blues musicians were seasoned veterans that helped electrify the genre, bringing more Soul and Funk melodies to the forefront. Jr Walker & the All-Stars were well known for their Soul Jazz sound. All of the performers had experienced or were currently experiencing commercial success, whether it was coming from their song, or a Rock musician covering it. I’m sure they did their thing today, all of em!
…‘Iz you down nizzah?!’…On September 8th, in 1975, the actor that brought us ‘Baby Baby-Frankie Lymon, Old Dog G’d Up in Menace II Society (America’s Nightmare), Darius Love Joy in Love Jones, Anthony Curtis in Dead Presidents, Drew Tate in Inkwell and on and on-Larenz Tate, was born in Chicago, Illinois. Longtime childhood friend of Malcolm Jamal Warner, Tate would get much inspiration to fulfill his dream of acting by seeing the success of his friend on the Cosby Show. As Tate matured as an actor over the years, he’s become well-known for being able to play a myriad of roles. He’s appeared on Televisions series since his pre-teen and teen years (Wonder Years, Brewster’s Place, 21 Jump Street). Overall, Tate is a good actor. I like him best in Menace, minus the scene where Sharif gets shot, his ‘crying game’ then was like…pause…not good. He’s 43 today!
…(bottles clanking) ‘Baaaaaaad Booooooy, come out to play-a-yay!’...On September 8th, in 1999, Sean Puffy Combes (P Diddy), was still on his gangster..on trial to be exact. He and his bodyguard Paul Offered copped a guilty plea for assaulting record mogul Steve Stoute with a telephone, champagne bottle and chair. Stoute had violated in some form or fashion to get Dame Dashed by Puffy. I don’t know the backdrop drama on it. However, Puffy was no stranger to violence or drama. He and Shyne got caught up on weapons charges back when he was with J-Lo, and she was Jenny from the Block. Y’all remember. The whole B.I.G. murder, Pac, I mean Puff played quiet and peaceful, but uh, he wasn’t afraid to get street with it. Even hired a rival Crip set for protection in NYC and CA. Violence subsides with income in most instances, the same can be said for P Diddy, he’s chilled out, a lot.
Honorable Mentions: On September 8th, in 1993, the power grunge couple, first lady and head of state for the genre-Courtney Love & Kurt Cobain performed together at a show in Hollywood, California. One of the songs they performed was written by both of them: Penny Royal Tea. Kurt & Courtney married and had a daughter before he passed away at age 27. On September 8th, in 1979, Alecia (Beth) Moore AKA Pink was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The singer, actress, songwriter, performer, and dancer is best known for her verse on the Eleventh Hour & Labelle cover of Lady Marmalade with Mya, Lil’ Kim & Christina Aguilera. However, Pink is no coattail rider, she’s sold over 100 million albums on her own. She had a Number one single in the US & UK with Get the Party Started. She’s 39 today! On September 8th, in 2007, Sharon Osbourne’s father and Ozzy Osbourne’s father in-law-Don Arden of Don Arden and the Small Faces, had a plaque unveiled at 52-55 Carnaby Street, in London at Arden’s office location. The plaque was dedicated to him for his uncanny ability to promote his bands, making sure they got fair deals, and were not exploited. He was known to have some ‘unconventional’ means in achieving this goal. Puffy and his henchmen jumped on Steve Stoute because asked to be edited out of the scenes where they are crucified on the cross. Stoute left it in anyway; and got whooped. Damon Dash has been verbally whipping on Steve Stoute for selling out Black Culture and Black Artists to Corporate Culture Vultures for probably the last ten years. Dude been a sellout for the longest; and is behind a lot of the fuckery we see in the media today.
