Before we had "Def Comedy Jam," "Martin," or any of the other major avenues for Black Comedians to regularly showcase their talents to the world, there was Sinbad. And almost only Sinbad. Though Sinbad's persona had a good dose of Coonish "Non-Threatening Negro" in him, his comedy was Real & Very Old School. In the clip below, Sinbad gives us a great dose of humor-speaking on everything from college life, to bad jheri curls to beatings from mama. Somewhat forgotten from comedy history, Sinbad absolutely paved the way for so many others to come a short time later. Salute.
Surely Paul Deen has to rank among the very most ignorant celebrities to come along in recent memory. One would think that losing tens of millions of dollars in endorsement deals would at least make one hire an assistant to filter what comes out of her mouth; but not this chick. Fresh off of scoring a new $75 million dollar investment deal with a Phoenix, Arizona Private Equity Firm, Deen compared her "struggle" to rebuild her image to that of Michael Sam-the first openly gay NFL prospect. Huh?
Now no matter what your position is on homosexuality, Paula Deen's comparison should be a head-scratcher to even the most unread anti gay extremist. Let's see, one is ALREADY RICH, and just looking to regain fame & future earnings that she never really lost. The other is a currently employed college student, who has jeopardized his future earnings & privacy-FOREVER-in a struggle to live life freely as he wants to live, Hmmmm.
Making matters worse, no one in Deen's camp ever saw fit to mention that using phrases like "that black football player" are not a good idea-especially when coming out of the mouth of someone who has been accused of being racist. But alas, this dummy will continue to get richer, and those of us who would criticize this will be labeled as overly sensitive-if not something worse. It is what it is.
"I feel like 'embattled' or 'disgraced' will always follow my name. It's like that black football player who recently came out," "He said, 'I just want to be known as a football player. I don't want to be known as a gay football player.' I know exactly what he's saying."
So Aaron Hernandez has been locked away in Solitary Confinement since late June; but earlier today was apparently allowed to take a walk down one of the hallways at the Bristol County Jail. What's newsworthy about this is that, while taking this leisurely stroll, Hernandez just happened to cross paths with an inmate that had been allegedly harassing him all day. Let's just say that Inmate X won't be picking on Aaron Hernandez again. Lol. According to TMZ, the former New England Patriots All-Pro Tight End laid out quite the can of Whoop Ass on his fellow prisoner. Of course this has yet to be confirmed by authorities at the Bristol County facility. Updates forthcoming, as soon as new info becomes available. Wow.
THE MANHATTANS-SHINING STAR
Aside from just being a beautiful song, that should put a smile on any person's face, The Manhattan's "Shining Star" carries some very fond memories attached to Saturday mornings with my mother. Not enough feel good music out there these days, nor just pure love songs. But I say that there's just no better way to start the day. Enjoy!
February 21, 1964. Four Men were detained at the scene; but only three names appeared in the media the next day. One of the three confessed to being a trigger-man in the assassination of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. And he (Thomas Hagan) stated that the other two men, who were convicted, were not involved at all. What we do know know is that we lost a WARRIOR on the stage of Harlem's Audubon Ballroom. What we do know is that both the FBI & CIA were tailing Malcolm EVERYWHERE he went. Be it Asia, Africa, The Middle East, or across the U.S, documents reveal that he was being tapped & tailed. Where were they that fateful day? Where were the NYPD? How was it that somehow Brother Shabazz had no security detail for his speech? Rather than go on & on, we will let those who were there speak to it. Peep this gripping video from the famous series "LIKE IT IS" with Gil Noble. Whatch every second. You may just learn SEVERAL things that you didn't know.

R.I.P. Brother Malcolm
RARE 1959 LECTURE FROM THE HONORABLE ELIJAH MUHAMMAD
For most, outside of Nation Of Islam rank & file, the majority of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad's teaching have been received via his books and/or via his students (Malcolm X & Louis Farrakhan). But thanks to the wonderful world of YouTube, we now have a taste of Elijah at his best. This 1959 lecture-given in Newark, New Jersey-features a relatively young Messenger providing rather fiery rhetoric on all sorts of topics. Take into consideration that this is right around the time that the NOI moved to center-stage of the American consciousness, as a CBS documentary (The Hate That Hate Produced) would launch The Honorable Elijah Muhammad & his young Minister Malcolm X into mainstream consciousness. In crazy times as these, we need so much more like this!

HOWARD HEWETT-SHOW ME
Starting with his days as Lead Singer for Shalamar, and on to what appears to have been a stable & successful career as a solo artist, Howard Hewett personifies everything that was the late eighties/early nineties soul music scene. During that era the music was much more sensual than before; but it still cared about romance. Singers like this told her how beautiful she looked, took her out-or kept her in for candle light dinner, maybe a shower or massage, THEN it was time to make love. Ahhhh, thise were the days.
It is a well-known, but conveniently ignored, fact that Each & Every One of the Holidays came from some Pagan-if not-animalistic ritual. In modern times these events were given a new face & used as reasons to make the mindless consumer spend more & more of their hard-earned money. For Valentine's Day in particular, its beginnings are rooted in The Festival of Lupercalia. The Festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on February 15th, is said to have been highlighted by men using goat & dog skins to whip random young women. The belief was that the ritual would enhance the young women's fertility. During the Roman Empire, the participants would run around naked & have sex in public. After the rise of the Christian Church, The Festival of Lupercalia was so popular that even religion could not steer the people away from their pagan ways. Thus the Church co-opted the festival & began claiming that it was in honor of St. Valentine-who legend says was executed by Emperor Claudius II for performing marriages outside of the rule of the Clergy. Today's version of Valentine's Day is linked to the legend of a love letter sent to the daughter of St. Valentine's jailer, and/or the engagement between England’s Richard II and Anne of Bohemia.
KNOW WHAT YOU CELEBRATE.
MARY J. BLIGE feat LAURYN HILL-BE WITH YOU *REMIX*
I first came across this song on an old DJ Evil Dee Mixtape back in the day, and as if I didn't love the original, I went BANANAS over the remix! It's pretty safe to say that in 94-95, these two women ruled the Soul/R&B music world for sure. And still to this day, regardless of whether they have current music out, the mention of these two names can bring an excitement like few others. Can we get a second coming of this collaboration please???
L-Boogie & Mary J in 2014! Fingers crossed...
In a time where the vast majority of our entertainers lack any form of culture; but instead exist simply to push consumerism & other forms of mindless fuckery, a man like Robert Nesta Marley is what is needed today. Unfortunately, like so many other Cultural Icons (i.e. Malcolm, Martin, Che, etc), even his likeness & legacy sometimes gets pimped out in the name of capitalism also. Bob Marley was a FREEDOM FIGHTER. He stood for Truth & Righteousness! Yeah, some of his songs were just about good vibes, fun & positive energy. But the bulk of his material spoke to the struggle for Human Rights & Freedom. Attached below is an interview with Gil Noble, in which Marley explains his views on Religion, Culture, African vs Jamaican Heritage, Humbleness, and of course music. HAPPY BORNDAY ROBERT NESTA MARLEY!!! 1946-1981
