Psychologist & Educator Dr. Umar Johnson has been at the forefront of the push to bring Black Mental Health Issues (such as Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder and the affects of Psychotropic Drugs) into the light as major reasons why some issues continue to negatively impact The Black Community. In this latest video Dr. Umar speaks on the dysfunction in Black Make/Female Relationships, and its correlation to The Black Community on a Whole. Espousing on everything from the negative effects of sibling Rivalries & issues within neighborhoods often lay the foundation for how we tend to look at each other, to how unresolved past grudges & trauma can destroy new relationships (and more importantly cause damage to the psyche of the person they entered into that relationship with), to the unhealthy and addictive habit of using relationships as a "pacifier" to distract us from dealing with our issues-The self-proclaimed "Prince Of Pan Afrikanism goes in on many of the way too common & repetitive mistakes we make in relationships. ANGELA WINBUSH - "ANGEL"
Also known for the classics she made as the face of 80's soul/R&B Duo Rene & Angela, and also for her brief marriage to The Legendary Ronald Isley, Angela Winbush has been the driving force behind some of the sweetest love songs of all time. From "I'll Be Good," to "Your Smile," to "You Don't Have to Cry," Angela has certainly brought some magic to the airwaves. "Angel" was standout single off of her debut album, "Sharp," released after the very bitter breakup of Rene & Angela. Angela went on to release three solo albums, and later would write & produce for The Isley Brothers, Ronald Isley, Lalah Hathaway, Klymaxx, Sheena Easton and others. She was also said to be the true creative force behind her years as part of Rene & Angela-writing, producing, arranging & even playing keyboards and synthesized bass. Explore her music, if not familiar. and for those that know already, Enjoy!
JANET JACKSON - "ANY TIME, ANY PLACE"
Black Love & Sensuality personified... From the moment the beat drops, and elevated beyond imagination once you hear her Janet's voice, her classic 1993 Love ballad will take over the mood of any music lover.
"In the thunder and rain, You stare into my eyes, I can feel your hand Movin up my thighs. Skirt around my waist, Wall against my face, I can feel your lips, Oooh"
Remember when songs painted sexy pictures, without being just straight up raunchy? Lol.
Happy Birthday Janet Jackson.
CHERRELLE & ALEXANDER O'NEAL - "SATURDAY LOVE"
As much as I love other genres of music, none can set the course of the day like a good soulful love song. Soak it up & have a Great Day!
"When I look at you
Memories of love
Like no one before
You stay on my mind
(Special feelings, special times)
Feeling so special
(I was yours and you were mine)
Made for each other, girl
(All the good I won't forget)
Staying on my mind, girl
(Saturday, the day we met)
Girl, you know I can't leave you behind
There's never any question
You will be my Saturday love"
Visuals courtesy of Our Brother Rasool M. Hashim-Ruffin, The DCDrama Magazine/Atlanta Inc's BEHIND THE LENS department pays homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his lovely wife Coretta. They were not only soldiers of LOVE, but two of the most eloquent human beings of their time.May we never forget the sacrifices those before us made.
ERYKAH BADU - "ORANGE MOON"
No better way to start off the day with a combined dose of Love & Intelligence.
This has always been one of my favorite Erykah Badu songs, and hearing takes me back to a beautiful time in my life. More importantly, for those with awareness of the teachings of The Nation of Gods & Earths/Five Percenters, this song has a Much Deeper Meaning.
And yes, she is One of Us. P.E.A.C.E.
"I'm an Orange Moon
I'm brighter than before
Brighter than ever before
I'm an Orange Moon and I shine so bright
Cause I reflect the light of my sun
I praise the day, he turned my way
And smiled at me
He gets to smile and I get to be orange, that I love to be
How good it is, how good it is..."
MARC ANTHONY - "QUE LIO" EL CANTANTE
A beautiful song about Love & Life. Straight from the 2006 movie "El Cantante." Both the movie & song are tributes to the Legendary Hector Lavoe, who is credited as the Father of Salsa Music. Enjoy!
WHITNEY HOUSTON - "SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU"
Happy Birthday Whitney!!!
Often overshadowed by her older sister Phylicia, Debbie Allen has been a force in Hollywood for decades. Debbie is best known for her roles as Lydia Grant on "Fame," Jackie Warren on "In The House," and as the producer/Director of "A Different World;" but actually has more than 49 acting credits & 39 directorial credits in what has been a beautiful career. She has choreographed five Academy Award shows, has Honorary Doctorates from both Howard University & The North Carolina School of the Arts, can be seen as Dr. Catherine Avery on "Grey's Anatomy," and today works to cultivate future legends at her Debbie Allen Dance Institute in Culver City, California. Personally she was one of my first crushes, as a child when I saw her play the young troubled bride-to-be Diana Buchanan on "Good Times."
Best known for her years playing the role of Clair Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," Phylicia Rashad personified everything a child could have wanted in a Mother-and everything a man would want in a Wife. Beautiful, Graceful, classy & No Non-Sense! Did I mention beautiful? Phylicia Rashad has a degree from the prestigious Howard University, was the first Black Woman to win a Best Actress Tony Award (A Raisin In The Sun,) and has more film, television & stage play credits then we could even try to list here. She even put out a disco album in 1978! Pow!!! And today she sits firmly on the Throne of Elders, and a model to future generations that we must embrace even more as we go forward...
Donny Hathaway - "Giving Up"
There's NOTHING in this world more valuable than love. If you have achieved that Divine Understanding with someone, Feed It & Cultivate it with all that you have in you. There's no greater pain in this life, than that feeling that comes with wondering "What If..." There may be many struggles & let-downs that may come in the journey toward love; but never-ever take it for granted. It might just not be there when you come back looking for it. P.E.A.C.E.
