MADAME C.J. WALKER
~ Mme. C.J. Walker
MADAME C.J. WALKER“Right here let me correct the erroneous impression held by some that I claim to straighten the hair. I deplore such impression because I have always held myself out as a hair culturist. I grow hair…I want the great masses of my people to take a greater pride in their personal appearance and to give their hair proper attention.” ~ Mme. C.J. Walker Born Sarah Breedlove, on December 23rd 1867, Madame C.J. Walker is credited as being the first "Self-Made" Female Millionaire. By the time of her passing in 1919, Madame C.J. Walker had built one of the largest black owned manufacturing companies in the world and resided in a 32 room mansion in New York. Starting with the altering of curling irons-previously made popular by the French-to suit the texture of Black women's hair, Madame Walker revolutionized the hair care and cosmetics industry for Black Women. The then-Sarah Breedlove changed her name to Madame CJ Walker, founded her own business, and began travelling all over the South-selling her product "Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower." The scalp conditioning and healing formula was derived from experimental home remedies she concocted to treat her own stress-related scalp condition that had caused her to lose hair previously. A story of perseverance like none other, Madame Walker fought on after a lynch mob murdered her husband & would find herself making $1.50 per day as a wash-woman, cook, and house-cleaner. Nine years later she was a certified millionaire. Madame C.J. Walker serves as an inspiration to Women & Entrepreneurs on a whole. We at THE WANDERING EYES BLOG celebrate her legacy, as you should also.

From the time of my childhood in the 70's, on up through the early 90's, there were always three constant loves present: Music, Kung Fu Flicks, & Pro Wrestling. From the the old Memphis/USWA, to the AWA, to the NWA, to World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas, to the WWF, I was always glued to the television to watch my favorites lock it up. The thing that was different about wrestling back them was that at least 90% of these cats were truly badass types that really could hurt somebody if they wanted to. And while there were a few that were still dope in the late 90's through the mid 2000's, wrestling pretty much took a more cartoonish approach around 1993 maybe. And so with all of my favorite wrestlers either dead or retired, there are very few things that could spark enough curiosity to make flick the channel over to the weekly WWE or TNA broadcasts. And honestly there are almost all based on my general LOVE FOR WOMEN. Lol. Enjoy. July 23rd 1984: Miss America Resigns...This week marks the 29th Anniversary of the Crowning, and eventual Resignation of the first Black Woman to win the Miss America Title. Few remember the lovely Ms. Vanessa Williams as Miss America, or for the scandal that followed a few months after the victory. For those that remember however, Ms. Williams would undeniably be an excellent example of elevating far beyond adversity. THE ISSUE AT HAND... In the months after Vanessa William's crowning, as Miss America, pictures were sold to Penthouse Magazine that featured Ms. Williams in a nude lesbian encounter with an unidentified Caucasian woman. Immediately this set the tone to enrage the rarely spoken of Racial & Sexual Taboos of the day. Whether or not the release was mistakenly agreed to (fine print), or if the release was completely illegal, has never been determined; but America was definitely NOT ready for this type of issue. Ms. Williams resigned at the request of pageant officials; and after a brief disappearance from the public eye, Vanessa would rise triumphantly with a career in music-and later in television & film. Many others would have broken under pressure; so we at The WANDERING EYES BLOG salute you Ms. Williams. Note from the Writer: There have only been eight Black Women crowned as Miss America to date:
Out of Respect for Ms. Williams, and general good taste, we left out the actual controversial pics; but a well-worded Google search will make you say WOW. Instead we will end this off with the video that wowed the general public into forgetting all about this period of the legendary Vanessa William's incredible life. Anyone who has known me for more than a few months has caught on to my borderline excessive love of beautiful women & passion for information. And as a self-proclaimed "Information Freak" & man with a life-complicating "Wandering Eye," few things move me more than being able to satisfy to cravings at the same time. I mean sure, I could watch Wolf Blitzer or Brian Williams deliver the news-but since they are all reporting essentially the same info-why wouldn't I prefer to get the news packaged with a Beautiful Smile & Pretty Eyes??? Boy, I'm probably gonna get in a lot of trouble for this post. Oh well. Fuckit. Lol Peep my list of the Top 10 Flyest Ladies of Television News (Not in any particular order).
