THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY FOR SELF-DEFENSE WAS FOUNDED ON THIS DAY. OCTOBER 10TH 1966 in Oakland California. Founding Members Huey P. Newton & Bobby Seale set out to build an an organization that would Serve & Protect the Needs of the Oppressed. Be it providing Food, Clothing, and a Protective Vanguard Force in the community, the ultimate goal was to overthrow the existing Ruling Power Structure & create one more rooted in Equality. One thing that The BPP Leadership was keenly aware of, unlike most others, was that the people's level of Consciousness would have to be elevated FIRST (i.e. the revolution first starts with the minds of the people). This many great social programs were instituted to give the people a feel for what a proper government should be like, and to break the sense of dependency of the existing government of the time. Being that this is assessment is likely FAR from the image more commonly provided in school & mainstream media, I strongly encourage all to read, study & learn. Good books to start with include:
We absolutely MUST Celebrate the Lives, Work & Legacy of those that Sacrificed for US. You can't really talk about Modern Day Comedy, without speaking first about Richard Pryor. His Socially/Politically Conscious-but Raunchy brand of humor changed comedy FOREVER. One forgotten piece of his history, is THE RICHARD PRYOR SHOW. The series aired briefly on NBC in 1977; but was pulled after much drama, and being deemed too aggressive for network television. Here's a couple of popular skits from the show... His real name was Walter Payton; and on October 7th 1984, he broke The Legendary Jim Brown's NFL All-Time Rushing Record. On that particular Sunday, Payton rushed for 154 yards-which was 88 more yards the previous record that had stood since 1965. Two years later, Walter P. retired with a total of 16,726 yards. The record would stand until 2002, when Emmitt Smith claimed the record. It is of HIGH IMPORTANCE to note that Emmitt would have NEVER won the rushing title had the Detroit Lions found themselves competent enough to build a team good enough to make Barry Sanders stick around for another year or two. There. I said it. Woosah.
